If Brian Bogusevic takes his career as far as his impressive tool set will
allow — admittedly a strange way to talk about a 28-year-old — Sunday could
be the day he solidified his status as a full-time player.
The Astros asked him to do something they might have forbidden him from doing
last year when he came up in a huge spot against a lefthanded pitcher. Not
just a lefthanded pitcher, but one who throws in the mid-90s and is
especially tough on lefties.
With the score tied at 2, Bogusevic handled Rex Brothers just fine, drilling
a single to put the Astros on top for good in a 3-2 win over the Colorado
Rockies.
The victory clinched the Astros’ first opening-series win since 2006 and
allowed them to leave the field with a winning record for the first time in
Brad Mills’ tenure. The last time they were above .500 was on July 29, 2009,
at 51-50.
