Source: Igarashi released

Reliever Ryota Igarashi has been released by the Mets, a major league source
tells ESPNNewYork.com.
Igarashi, 32, just completed a two-year, $3 million deal after coming over
from Japan.
Normally, he would not be eligible for free agency until after six years of
major league service. But like with Hisanori Takahashi, the former Mets
regime put a clause in Igarashi's original major league contract granting
free-agency rights if the sides could not agree to a new deal after the
expiration of the original agreement.
Igarashi did not appear in the Mets' plans anyway. He went 5-2 with a 5.74
ERA over two seasons and also spent significant stretches in the minors.
Igarashi told ESPNNewYork.com at the end of the season that he wanted to
continue his major league career in 2012. Because of an affinity for the
United States, Igarashi intended to spend much of his offseason in New York.
