Three years after Linsanity, he’s stuck in Lakers purgatory

On Wednesday night, Carmelo Anthony was asked about emerging Knicks guard
Langston Galloway and how the rookie doesn’t shy away from the big spots.
“I don’t know, man, I would say probably Linsanity,” Anthony said. “[Lin]
wasn’t a rookie, but he was here and he had that mindset of taking the big
shot when he first got here. I don’t like to compare anything, but Langston’
s mindset of being willing to take that big shot, take the open shot, just
having the opportunity out there, I think Langston loves those moments.”
Linsanity was born three years ago in the wake of the last time the Patriots
were in the Super Bowl — losing to the Giants in Super Bowl XLVI. In the
news vacuum that followed, Lin took New York and the basketball world by
storm, revitalizing the Knicks after an uninspiring start to the season.

Now, with shot-heavy superstar Kobe Bryant sidelined for nine months with a
torn rotator cuff, it would appear Lin would have a chance to star again on
the talent-deprived Lakers. But in the first game Bryant missed — Friday
night against the Spurs — Lin did not get off the bench, passed in the
rotation by rookie Jordan Clarkson and veteran Ronnie Price. Not exactly
Magic Johnson and Jerry West.
“I’m human. I got emotions,” Lin told the Los Angeles Daily News about the
benching.
“I show up and do my best to play and work hard. But it definitely hurts. It
’s discouraging sometimes and disappointing. All of those emotions, of
course. I don’t think anybody would feel great after a DNP, no matter who
you are.”
A far stretch from the height of Linsanity — look at the Raptors crowd
rising to the moment.

Lin talked to coach Byron Scott about the snub and came off the bench in
losses to the Rockets and Wizards as the Lakers plummeted to 12-34.
“I watch and see how the game is going,” Scott told the paper. “I have a
good idea of what I’m going to do. But I let the game dictate that.”
Lin had two respectable seasons in Houston after leaving New York, but saw
his role reduced as the talent around him grew to contender level in the
brutal Western Conference. He saw significant action in the Rockets’ playoff
series defeat by the Blazers before being dealt to the Lakers to open up cap
space. Now he finds himself fighting for a similar reserve role — or worse —
on a team with far less ability.
Scott’s first season back in Los Angeles has been a disaster, from Bryant’s
questionable shooting to prized rookie Julius Randle missing all but 14
minutes of his season with a broken leg to Nick Young saying “pretty much
just give me the ball and get out of the way” after Bryant’s injury.
Though Lin’s rise came with Anthony out with a groin injury, it appears no
Linsanity sequel is coming out West.
“The only thing that has been consistent is the amount of inconsistency I’
ve had in my life,” Lin said. “I’ve gone from getting cut in the D-League
to starting to playing heavy minutes to all these different roles every week.
I have to keep staying aggressive when I get out there.”
