Chelsea Here Chelsea There: Ampadu makes Spezia debut, Slonina helps
Chicago to vital win
12 SEP 2022
Football was suspended in Britain over the weekend, but there were still
some Chelsea players in action on loan overseas...

Ethan Ampadu made his debut for Spezia as they travelled to unbeaten
Napoli in Serie A on Saturday and they came agonisingly close to being
only the second team to leave the Stadio Diego Maradona with a point this
season.
The Welsh international slotted into a Spezia back three which impressed
throughout as they defended valiantly and frustrated their opponents, with
the score locked at 0-0 when Ampadu was substituted with 20 minutes
remaining. However, with Ampadu on the sidelines, Napoli finally found a
winner in the 89th minute to deny Spezia a valuable point and move
themselves top of the table.
Gabriel Slonina was part of the Chicago Fire team which ended their run of
four games without a goal and five without a win by beating Inter Miami
3-1. Goalkeeper Slonina played his part with an important save from a
free-kick as Chicago were leading 1-0 and, despite conceding from a
penalty taken by former Chelsea striker Gonzalo Higuain, and his Fire
team-mates held on for a much-needed victory on home soil in MLS.

Callum Hudson-Odoi was desperately unlucky not to score his first goal for
Bayer Leverkusen when they travelled to Club Brugge in the Champions
League. The German side had gone behind to a freak goal shortly before
half-time, when their goalkeeper Lukas Hradecky had stumbled across his
line with the ball after making a save.

Hudson-Odoi thought he had equalised when his curling free-kick made its
way through a crowded penalty area and into the net, but it was disallowed
when replays showed it had taken a touch off a defender, who was under
pressure from a marginally offside Leverkusen player. The visitors had a
second goal ruled out for offside too as they fell to a 1-0 defeat.

The winger was in the starting line-up again as Bayer Leverkusen returned
to domestic duties with an entertaining 2-2 draw away at Hertha Berlin.
Leverkusen had gone ahead just after half-time, only to concede twice to
go behind and then find an equaliser of their own with 10 minutes left.
Having been an unused substitute in Monaco's mid-week Europa League win at
Red Star Belgrade, Malang Sarr came of the bench in Ligue 1 on Sunday to
help the principality side hold on for a narrow 2-1 victory at home
against Lyon.
Two second-half headers in quick succession put Monaco ahead before Sarr
was introduced to maintain that lead with just over 20 minutes remaining.
The visitors managed to pull one back late on, but the home side held
their lead to the end to move into the top half of the table and within
two points of their opponents in fifth place.
