TAMPA – Shortstop Ha-Seong Kim is not yet back with the Rays, but he’s going t
o be around the team a lot more this week.
Kim took part in pregame drills on Monday afternoon ahead of the series opener a
t George M. Steinbrenner Field against the Astros – a game the Rays lost 4-3.
Manager Kevin Cash described the week as “important” for the 29-year-old Kim,
who missed the entire season following right shoulder surgery last October.
If all goes well, he may get some at-bats this weekend in a rehab assignment wit
h the Florida Complex League before moving on to rehab games at higher-level min
or league teams.
Considering that Kim missed a significant number of games since his injury in Au
gust last year, he needs ample time on the field and enough at-bats to be consid
ered ready to return to the major leagues.
However, during Monday’s practice, his throws from the infield appeared stronge
r and more direct, and he’s been regularly participating in batting practice si
nce spring training.
