The Philadelphia Phillies have granted outfielder Bobby Abreu his unconditional
release, as first reported by Jim Salisbury of CSNPhilly.com. Abreu was
recently told tht he did not mae the Phillies' Opening Day roster, and
decided to pursue opportunites elsewhere.
According to sources, Abreu does not yet have a job lined up with another
team, and it is unclear if he will be willing to re-sign with the Phillies
for the chance to play at Triple-A Lehigh Valley. With a weak free agent
market for outfielders, it is possible that Abreu could get an opportunity to
be on a team's Opening Day roster.
After signing a minor league deal with the Phillies in January, Abreu hit
.244 with 2 RBI in 17 spring training games. The 40-year old is looking to
appear in the majors for the first time since 2012 with the Angels and
Dodgers, when he hit .242 with 3 HR and 24 RBI in 100 games.
